I was always envious of people who LOVED horses. The ones who knew from the time they were very small that, yep, their passion was horses and that every waking moment of their life from that point on would revolve around these gorgeous creatures.
I, unfortunately, really, really don’t like horses (year 11 camp incident I’ll fill you in on another time).
Shout out to my horse loving and fellow small business lover Nicole who invited me to take photos at her gorgeous property in Tyalgum in the Northern Rivers of NSW. How beautiful are those horses .... from a distance!
I also have never really been sure what my passion is. I actually just thought I didn’t have one. But it turns out that when I take a step back and look at my life from a distance, there is a definite set of recurring themes.
. Small Business
(and mental health but that’s a topic for another day and you can see what I do with that here at www.theyesproject.org.au)
You see, I never saw my parents work a day of paid employment. They always did their own thing. Let’s call it ‘startup syndrome’ .. and this had me working most weekends of my early years in the family biz. Whatever that happened to be that year.
From wedding reception venues to Christmas tree nurseries, delicatessens to crayfish farms and more. You name it, they did it … and as a result, so did I. Mostly working for cash to spend on CDs and concert tickets.
Whether it happened by osmosis or through some kind of genetic transmission, it turns out I’m also a member of the startup lovers club.
I really love working in small business. I love watching people come up with ideas. I love building the bones of a business. I love marketing. I love branding. I love creating content for businesses. Social media scheduling. I love photography. I love designing websites, marketing materials, events and more. I love watching people take a risk and seeing it pay off. An idea come to life. Sisters doin’ it for themselves. And without a word of a lie, I could do all of this stuff day in and out for peanuts (and trust me I have!) and love every second of it.
Ohhhhhh … so you’re telling me I have a PASSION? Who knew hey.
I often say at 17 I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do with my life and go on and on about how ridiculous it is that highschoolers have to choose their careers at such a young age. Well, turns out I DID have some idea when I did that Marketing and IT degree back when Y2K was a thing. Mum and Dad would be proud to know their hard earned coin didn’t actually go to waste after all. Thanks guys!
I’ve been a professional photographer now for almost 8 years. For a long time I photographed babies and portraits during the younger years of my own children and it was great. But the baby days here have passed and while there is no doubt newborns are still epically cute, I’d rather you guys just hold onto them from now on. (or go visit my BFF Carol Souza Photography instead)
What I’ve realised is this.
I love small business.
I love marketing.
I love content creation.
I love photography.
And I particularly love supporting women in business.
So there it is. Passion on a platter. And it’s delicious.
Now that I find myself at a crossroads in my career, it makes complete and utter sense to go forward supporting other women in business with my marketing and photography skills. I’m at a point in my life that I don’t want to waste another second working on things that don’t bring me joy and that impact my mental health.
So let’s do this.
A Little Life - take 2.
Photography. Branding. Content Creation . Marketing
Photographing from Brisbane to Byron Bay with regular detours through the Scenic Rim (my 3 homes)
And of course wedding photography … because I couldn’t possibly waste all of the skills I learnt waitressing at mum and dad’s wedding reception centre every Saturday night of my entire teenage life.
Thanks for being here and following along on my adventure so far.
